Who are we?

Taste Before You Waste is an initiative focused on the prevention of food waste that was founded in Amsterdam in November 2012. By picking up surplus food and using these goodies as inspiration and fuel for all our activities, ranging from Free FoodMarkets, Community Dinners and Educational Workshops to Event Caterings, Presentations and Donations to Charities we aim to raise awareness about the enormous amount of food that is thrown away and educate people about what they can do to prevent this from happening. Serving consciousness on a platter is how we plan to revolutionize the food system, one neighbourhood at a time!


What problem do we see?

Our food system is currently failing. At every step along the food supply chain, from agricultural production to household consumption, perfectly edible food is discarded unnecessarily, mounting to a total of 40% percent of all food produced for human consumption. Apart from the wastage of the food itself, scarce resources are exploited in an unsustainable manner, causing water shortages, soil degradation, deforestation, declining fish stocks, greenhouse gas and methane emissions.

At the same time, we are faced with the challenge of sustainably feeding an ever-growing world population that is expected to reach 9 billion by 2050 and over 800 million people worldwide are already living in hunger. Therefore, a wasteful food system is both environmentally irresponsible and socially unacceptable.

With 38 % of all food waste in the Netherlands coming from individuals, it is clear to us that this is largely a civic problem in need of a bottom-up solution. So, let’s not hang around! We, as consumers, have the power to push for structural change and eliminate a large amount of food waste if we own up to our responsibilities.


What do we envision?

By raising awareness and empowering citizens, Taste Before You Waste contributes to a social movement that pushes for a fairer and more sustainable food system. One that promotes a society in which food is highly valued, a society in which our perception is brought back to the understanding that food is the very basis of life.


Key activities:

TBYW saves surplus food from going to waste from local grocery shops (6 times a week) and from producers (on an irregular basis). This food gives us the fuel and inspiration for all our activities, which are:

Donations to Charities: TBYW donates rescued food at least three times a week to several charities in Amsterdam. By supplying them with food donations, those who work for a better world or those who may usually go hungry are able to eat healthily and for free.

Free-Food Markets: We find that giving away food for free invites people into a conversation about food waste.

No-Waste Community Dinners: Once a week we organise a dinner at which we serve healthy, delicious, vegetarian dinners made out of local food that would otherwise be wasted.

Catering Events: Whether at a casual lunch or a gala dinner, we always use the opportunity to share our story with the participants. We always aim to surprise the customer with creative presentation and delicious food.

Educational Workshops: Workshops are important tools that not only heighten consciousness on food waste, but share skills that teach participants how to practice food conservation in the kitchen at home. 

Presentations: Whether in a pitch, short talk or full length lecture, Luana Carretto, TBYW’s founder, is an inspirational speaker on topics such as food waste, sustainability, social entrepreneurship, activism and how to motivate volunteers or society at large.


We are looking for someone to join our team, who is passionate about our cause and has just the right experience and know-how to spread our message online.


More specifically you will:

●      Designing a campaign strategy, under consideration of the individual functionalities of each social media outlet

●      Set up accounts on new social media outlets and revise those existing

●      Attend and report on our activities

●      Create engaging content, including snapshots, engaging short texts, captivating tweets and the list goes on…

●      Maintain all social media accounts on a daily basis

●      Reflect and adjust strategy accordingly to the engagements with our publications

●      Communicate with other team members and coordinate their contributions to social media channels

●      Write blog posts on a weekly basis

●      Send out press releases on an ad-hoc basis

Language requirement

Excellent command of English is required, as all media content will be in English language. Proficiency in Dutch is an added bonus, but not necessary.
