Description

CERSOM is a boarding school and college for deaf students, which aims to provide a primary school education for the kids in the Western Region of Cameroon. It was established by the current principle, Innocent Djonthé, in 1987. Ever since the institution has successfully managed to expand and broaden the opportunities for deaf and hearing-impaired children within the region.

The student population amounts to about 120 students, whereby about half of them live in the student dorms. The school is financed by the school fees paid by the parents but also heavily relies on public and private sponsors, such as the French embassy. Since the past 5 years, numerous international volunteers have worked at CERSOM, and the school has been an official partner in the volunteer project ‘Weltwärts’ by the GIZ (Gesellschaft zur Internationalen Zusammenarbeit), the biggest development aid organization in Germany.

The tasks of a volunteer at CERSOM highly depend on the interests and skills of the person. There is the possibility to give sports and arts lessons during school time, as well as to organize social activities during the afternoon for the kids living in the dorms. Current projects of the school are to reorganize and expand the school library, and to improve the cultivation of the school garden. However, the volunteer is highly encouraged to create his/her own projects and to come up with new ideas and suggestions to support CERSOM.

Further information about CERSOM is provided on the official homepage http://cersom.jimdo.com/in-english/
